Seen from Space 2003

International Conference in Sapporo

The 23 rd International Union of Geophysics and Geodesy (IUGG) general assembly was held in Sapporo from June 30 to July 11, 2003. IUGG is an international conference on Earth and planetary sciences. The general assembly is held every four years in various parts of the world. Sapporo, this year's host, was bustling with five thousand participants from both Japan and abroad. The Earth Observation Research Center (EORC) set up a booth at the exhibition with the theme of "Global environment seen from space." On July 2, President Yamanouchi explained the global environment seen from Midori II to the Imperial couple visiting IUGG.

Here, we will introduce some EORC researchers who attended the session and gave presentations.

Robert Hoeller

In my presentation I showed the first results of retrieved aerosol properties over land surfaces using GLI Channel 1 and 2 observations.

Shoichi Shige

I made a presentation about spectral retrieval of latent heating profiles, which is as major scientific target of TRMM for rainfall estimation.

Toshiyoshi Kimura

I gave a presentation about the scientific goals of the Earth Clouds, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite, a joint European-Japanese mission, and the research conditions of onboard sensors.

Shinsuke Satoh

I introduced the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), and GPM's research role in water cycle prediction.
