Caveat for 1B21 product (version 5A)

February 1, 2002

  1. A bug are found in 1B21 algorithm for post-boost data (from August 25, 2001 to January 31, 2002), which is using false information for startBinDist in RAYHEADER for the angle bins 1, 2, 3, 4, 46, 47, 48, and 49.
  2. Since the bug in startBinDist, following items contains offset for those angle bins: binEllipsoid, binDIDHmean, binDIDHtop, and binDIDHbottom.
  3. Difference from true value for each items are (current value -true):

  4. startBinDist :
      angle bin 1 and 49 + 749.968m
    angle bin 2 and 48 + 500.0m
    angle bin 3 and 47 + 250.0m
    angle bin 4 and 46 + 125.0m

    binEllipsoid, binDIDHmean, binDIDHtop, binDIDHbottom:
      angle bin 1 and 49 - 6
    angle bin 2 and 48 - 4
    angle bin 3 and 47 - 3
    angle bin 4 and 46 - 1

  5. Direct influences to higher level algorithms are:
  6. 2A23 : BrightBandHeight
    StormHeight
These values are overestimated as the same manner as starBinDist.
    2A25: rain profile
This value has range offset by the half of range bin offset of binEllipsoid.

  7. Secondary effect:
  8. 1B21: Small number of differences can be found in minEchoFlag, binStormHeight, binClutterFreeBottom, and binSurfPeak, but the impact is not large.
2A21: Sigma-zero estimation may be slightly influenced.
2A23: Rain type and others may be influenced slightly.
2A25: Rain rate estimation is affected, because 2A25 uses the outputs from 1C21(=1B21), 2A21, and 2A23.

  9. Revised algorithm is running from February 1, 2002.
