On the distribution of Himawari-9 data due to the suspension of the Himawari-8 observation

JAXA Himawari Monitor
08 February 2018
Earth Observation Research Center, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

Due to the maintenance of the Himawari-8 satellite, all of the Himawari-8 product will be unavailable during the following period. During this period, the JAXA Himawari monitor will distribute the Himawari Standard Data, L1 Gridded data, and limited geophysical data (Sea Surface Temperature, Wild Fire) derived from Himawari-9.

Period:

Feb. 13, 2018, 02:20(UTC) - Feb. 14, 2018, 07:10(UTC)

Himawari-9 data distribution:

Standard Data (HSD), L1 Gridded data, Geophysical Product(Sea Surface Temperature, Wild Fire)

Maintenance details (by Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA)

Caveats for the Himawari-9 Products

  • The "H08" in the NetCDF file names will be changed to "H09".
    e.g. L1 Gridded Product: NC_H09_20180213_0230_R21_FLDK.02401_02401.nc
  • JMA has reported that some bias was recognized in the observation characteristics for each bands due to the difference in the calibrations between Himawari-8 and Himawari-9. Therefore, we will distribute the geophysical products only for SST and WLF during this period.
  • Regarding the SST product, we found approximately 0.5 ºC; decrease in the Himawari-9 retrievals compared the Himawari-8 product due to the difference in the calibration. Please take this in mind when using the products.
