  Background and Objectives
In the GPM Era, it is required to provide precipitation distribution data with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution in real time base.

GPM data utilization includes not only meteorological and climatologically sciences but also operational applications, such as, short-term weather and flood forecasts. For the weather forecast, data latency of about three hours is required. For the nowcasting and flush flood forecasting, hourly data are required.

GPM data system is expected to contribute to give the good initial data and can contribute to very short-term forecast. In the world there exist a lot of large catchment areas where the GPM three hourly monitoring data can directly contribute for the flood forecast. GPM observation could particularly important for the so-called ungauged or poorly gauged areas.

The GDaWG is not a governing body for the GPM mission. The ties with GPM management and other GPM organizations are informal and pragmatic rather than hierarchical. Nevertheless, GDaWG will have close ties with the GPM Combined Science Team and GPM management through technical studies, recommendations and documents.

The GDaWG achieves its purpose by providing a forum for GPM partner data system personnel to coordinate their individual activities.
