1. Overview

The Earth Observation Center (EORC) of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has released a map of forest above-ground carbon stocks (=biomass) in Japan as a result of the joint research "Estimation of Forest Above-Ground Biomass Using Satellite Data" (Principal Investigator: Professor Tomomichi Kato, Graduate School of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, Japan) approved by "the Third Research Announcement on the Earth Observation".*
In this research, a high-resolution biomass map was generated by constructing a model using machine learning based on satellite data from JAXA's “Daichi-2” (ALOS-2), the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 optical satellite, and other data, as well as above-ground biomass measurements data by airborne laser surveys (LiDARs).
The newly created map of forest above-ground carbon stocks consisting of the forest above-ground biomass, timber volume, and tree height, is available on this website, allowing anyone to check the forest above-ground carbon stocks in any region. In the future, further improving the accuracy of the maps, creating maps for multiple periods, and creating maps for other countries will be planned.
