These are images of concentrated heavy rain over western Japan observed by TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) on June 29, 1999 (local time). TRMM observed western Japan twice at 15:57-16:00 (Figs.1-a and 1-b)(local time) and 17:32-17:36 (Figs.2-a and 2-b) in the afternoon on that day. In these two images, heavy rain bands crossing from northeast to southwest were moving in the eastward direction.
In the TRMM PR observation, rain rates which are greater than 60mm/hour were observed (Figs.2b). According to the AMEDAS rain gauge observation, rain rate of more than 60mm/hour was recorded at Hiroshima. This shows that rain estimates by TRMM PR agree with ground-based measurements.
