Introduction : In the framework of CEOS Working Group on Calibration and Validation, the next SAR subgroup workshop will be organized by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) in Tokyo, Japan, from 2 to 5 April 2001.

* No registration fees will be requested for the
workshop. However, you have to bear all traveling costs for your
participating in the workshop.
The presentations will be conducted in English as well as posters and papers for the proceedings.
Conference rooms will be equipped with an overhead, PC, and video projector for oral presentation.
A space of 1m (width) x 1m (height) will be available for each poster. All the material required to fix the posters will be provided at the workshop.
The welcome reception will be held at "Toranomon-Pastral" in the evening on 3 April 2001. Further information will be provided at the workshop.
The currency is the yen. The exchange rate was \119.00 as of 15 January 2001. Money can be exchanged at major banks and limited number of hotels. As the nation's financial regulations are loosen up, you may find that it is gradually becoming easier to change money in other locations, too. Some shops even accept payment in US dollars.
Banknotes : 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 yen. Coins : 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 yen.
Traveler's Cheque, Credit Cards & VAT
Travelerfs cheques are not as widely used in Japan as in most other countries and are accepted only by major banks and hotels. Major credit cards are widely accepted. Conventional checks are almost unheard of in everyday life. The consumption tax (VAT) rate is 5%.
Participants are advised to arrange their own overseas travel insurance.
A rough guide to clothing requirements : light sweater needed from late October or early April. (The average daytime temperature of Tokyo is about 15-18)
In relation to Greenwich, Tokyo is + 9 hours.
100-110 volts and a flat two-pronged plug, type A, are used. A Japanese quirk: 60 Hz in western Japan; 50 Hz in eastern Japan, including Tokyo. Please use your own electrical outlet adapter to adjust the AC plug on your equipment to the above-mentioned Japanese AC power supply as it is difficult to purchase it locally. Please bring the power transformer such as from 200V AC to 100V AC.
Tips are not required or expected in Japan, at hotels, restaurants and anywhere else. A 10-20 percent service charge is included in some bills.
Passport and Visa
Every foreign visitor entering Japan must have a valid passport. Visitors from nations whose citizens must have visas should apply to a Japanese consular office or diplomatic mission in their country. If you require any documents, please contact the Workshop operation office.
