Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) Science Research Announcement

Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) Science
8th Research Announcement

In this eighth Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) Science Research Announcement (RA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announces the opportunity for researches, relating to the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. Participation in this RA is open to all categories of domestic and foreign organizations including educational institutions (except for students), industries, non-profit institutions and Japanese Government agencies. However, funding may differ for each research category and applicant.

To meet the mission objectives of TRMM and GPM, which are to understand and predict global water cycle variation and contribute to operational use, this RA seeks to conduct researches necessary to generate global, highly-accurate, uniform and long-term stable precipitation products (i.e., "Algorithm Development" and "Validation"), and researches related to climate and water cycle variation and development of new research products using techniques such as models and/or data assimilation (i.e., "Application Research").

1. Outline of the RA

In this RA, JAXA will give priority to the following research themes; 1) development and improvement of the GPM standard algorithms; 2) in-situ observations and validation of precipitation parameters that contribute to development and improvement of the algorithms; 3) inter-comparison of precipitation datasets with a central focus on GPM, TRMM and GSMaP; and 4) model utilization or data assimilation of the DPR and GSMaP data. This RA covers a three-year research period beginning in JFY 2016. Please read RA documents for more details.

2. Proposal

RA details and forms for proposals can be downloaded from the following:

− RA Details and Forms (Adobe PDF MS Word )

Proposals with complete sets of attachments, such as reprints of papers, should be converted to PDF format and sent via E-mail to the PMM RA Office (see section 3).

Proposers without access to the Web or who experience difficulty in using this site may contact to the PMM RA office for assistance.

Proposals should be submitted to the office no later than November 1, 2015.
