NewsSakurajima volcano eruption

Sakurajima volcano erupted explosively from Showa crater (~ 800m elevation) at 1:07 am on May 10, 2014. The volcanic plume rose up to about 4500 m height.

This is the second highest plume on record. (The highest plume (about 5000 m height) recorded on August 18, 2013.) At the time of eruption, the north wind blew near the Sakurajima and the plume spread southward (in the direction of Ibusuki-city).

The image was obtained just after 20 minutes of volcanic eruption (1:26 pm). The extent of plume was about 6 km in the north-south direction and 7 km in the east-west direction.

※The TANSO-CAI image was composed of band 3 (870 nm) in red, band 2 (674 nm) in green and band 1 (380 nm) in blue.
