3. THE THIRD ADEOS WORKSHOP HELD SUCCESSFULLY

NASDA, EA and MITI held the Third ADEOS Workshop at the Sendai International
Center from January 26 (Monday) through January 30 (Friday), 1998; 240
experts from 23 countries participated.

The workshop consisted of three parts.

(1) The plenary sessions on January 26 and January 27 were open to the public
    as the ADEOS Symposium. Dr. Y. Toba, Chief Scientist of NASDA EORC gave
the
    opening address. In the plenary sessions, the following reports were made:

(3) The closing session was held in the morning of January 30.
    -  Leaders of sensor and science teams reported summaries and
       recommendations of each team meeting.
    -  Action items of the third ADEOS workshop were reviewed.
    -  Mr. T. Tanaka, Director of NASDA EORC, summarized the workshop.
       The following is an outline.
       a) 10 Months of ADEOS data is valid for research on Earth Science and
          Application.
           Further analysis should be done in the future.
           Several remaining works as follows;
            - Refine algorithm
            - Cross analysis between instruments
            - In-situ data exchange
            - Combined dataset strongly recommended
       b) Data distribution is still to be improved.
       c) ADEOS-II should be launched as soon as possible.

       For the future:
       a) Easy access to data
       b) Seven-instrument campaign (Apr. 1 '97 - Apr. 10 '97) starts soon.
       c) Final ADEOS Workshop is planned in July 1999.
    Dr. H. Shimoda, ADEOS Program Scientist of NASDA EORC, gave the closing
remarks.

Proceedings of the workshop were published in March, and we have already sent
