Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin (Germany)

 |
The above images show the areas around Berlin and Potsdam, as observed on May 9, 1993, by VNIR sensor onboard JERS-1.
In Potsdam, located about 27 kilometers southwest of the Berlin old city (upper right side of the image), a fascinating ensemble of palaces, parks and gardens lie along the River Havel. The upper left image shows a detailed Pfaueninsel (the Park of Peacock Island), a small island floated on the Havel. In 1975 a white wooden castle was built on the island. Many peacocks were actually kept at the castle and enchanted guests and visitors.
The lower left image magnifies the park and palace Sanssouci. It is one of the largest castles in this area. The construction of the palace was completed in 1795 by the Prussian king Frederick II. The palace was filled with delightful art and music, where the king could escape from the round of wars and social duties. The palace is located in the vast park covering 300 million square meters.
Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin were included in UNESCOs list of World Heritage in 1990, and designated area was expanded in 1992.
