TMI First Image

trmm_all_small_e.jpg

This is to complement the caption for both upper and lower global images.

On the upper image, vertical data of 19GHz, horizontal data of 85GHz and vertical polarization data are put together and made into a colored composite image. The whitish yellow portion in the sea shows a low temperature area due to the crystallized ice in the clouds, which corresponds to the heavy precipitation area. The white portion of the sea shows that the air is dry, and the darker the color is, the more water vaporization or clouds it contains. The specially bright spots in the Himalayas and the northern American Continent shows that the land surface temperature is low or snow-covered.

The lower image is acquired by the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS). It is confirmed that the spot where the lightning-induced electricity is observed by the LIS, corresponds to the spot where the temperature is low and crystallized ice can be expected. Lightning was clearly observed in Japan, New York State off-shore and the eastern Mediterranean where frequent lightning is famous during the winter.
