Image of typhoon No.28 by TRMM PR radar

These images were acquired by the TRMM PR above the area close to the center of typhoon No.28 at 13:00, December 19, 1997 (JST). The blue band on the image 1 is the observation area with a width of about 220 km. The green spot is the typhoon No.28 which is located about 1,000 km from the eastern sea of the Philippines.

The upper image in No.2 was produced by vertically slicing the typhoon center area to show the profile. The lower images show the profile at altitudes of 3 km and 10 km respectively. The precipitation at an altitude of 10 km around the typhoon eye can be identified. Further the typhoon eye is so distinctly shaped as to recognize that it is well developed. The color of the image is the precipitation intensity obtained from the PR, meaning that the warmer color shows heavier rains.

Thus, it is one of the outstanding features of the PR to globally observe the three-dimensional distribution of the rainfall and is expected to contribute greatly to future studies.

Please note that these images are under calibration and validation.
