The National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) received on October 1,1996, at its Earth Observation Center in Hatoyama, Saitama Pref., the first images taken with the infrared bands of the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS), one of the Earth observing sensors aboard NASDA's remote sensing satellite ADEOS.

The images describe the surface temperature of the sea. One of the images covers an about 1,400km x 2,000km area of the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea, and the resolution of this high definition image is about 700m across on the ground. Another image has about 540km x 430km coverage with as low definition as its resolution is about 6km across on the ground. These two images were taken at about 11:32 am JST, October 1, when the satellite was flying at an altitude of about 800km over the area.

The images like those taken by OCTS will help not only grasp the status of the sea and fishery there, but also better understand the mechanism of phenomena, like El Nino, that are believed to cause abnormal weather.

The acquisition of the images was done as a part of OCTS checkout, which will be continued toward the routine operation of the sensor.
