Seen from Space 2003

Cool Weather in Bai-u Season

Eastern and northern Japan often suffer Tsuyu-zamu(*).
Cold, wet northeast winds from high-pressure systems in the Sea of Okhotsk prevent temperature rises, resulting in gloomy weather with clouds or rain. This is seen especially on the Pacific side of eastern Hokkaido and Tohoku district.

This wind is called the "Northeast wind" or "Yamase." It frequently appears from Bai-u season to midsummer, and if it lasts a long time, crops of rice, beans, and vegetables do not grow enough due to low temperatures and a lack of sunlight, and that significantly affects the size of crops.

GLI acquired this image of Japan on July 18, 2003. We can see the clouds on the Pacific side of Tohoku district along the Ohu mountains. These low clouds appear around land surfaces and are brought by the northeast wind. Because the wind never reaches the opposite side of the mountains, we can see good weather on the Sea of Japan side in this image. In addition, the clouds that almost cover western Japan are from a low-pressure center on the Bai-u front.

On the day the image was acquired, the maximum temperature in Sendai was 7 degrees lower than normal and sometimes it dizzled.

The sea fog, that worries sailors, is also a phenomenon peculiar to that season.
