Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) Science Research Announcement
Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) Science 5th Research Announcement
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announces the solicitation of research proposals for Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) to conduct scientific investigations in precipitation science and related tropical energetics in connection with the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). This Research Announcement (RA) is to promote utilization of the TRMM data for understanding the distribution and variation of tropical rainfall and applying them to various scientific areas.
Participation in this RA is open to all categories of domestic and foreign organizations including educational institutions (except for students), industries, non-profit institutions and Japanese Government agencies.
1. Outline of the RA
TRMM satellite, launched in November 1997, is the first satellite dedicated to measuring tropical and subtropical rainfall from space. The mission of TRMM project is to develop a scientific understanding of the global energy and water cycles through quantitative measurement of precipitation and to enable improved prediction capabilities for climate, weather and natural disasters. More than nine years of data have now been accumulated.
This RA emphasizes climate research that utilizes this long accumulation of precipitation data and precursory research that will benefit the planned Global Precipitation Measuring (GPM) mission.
2. Proposal
